How to Start a Story
✨Now available for early registration! ✨
This course will be available on May 10 & sent out to all early registrations at that time
How to Start a Story: Craft-focused prompts and exercises to help you consciously start your stories
A 30-minute on-demand class from journalist, author and mentor Michelle Kicherer
This mini course is focused on the most difficult part of writing a story: starting.
In How to Start a Story we’ll use three very different types of writing prompts to start a story with potential. Then, we’ll review how these prompts help you to reflect on what your story is “about.”
We’ll also work on a story together! I’ll use an example for each prompt to help get you started. Or, you can even start off with my example!
In fact, Banana Pitch Press will be hosting a page for participating writers to submit one of their stories they used in this class. Each participating writer who takes the course May through August 10, 2025 is guaranteed for their story to be featured on the press website. See below for guidelines. The collective story we’ll be writing together is called “Barry’s Parakeet.”
